Cable TVCable TV is available in most cities. However, most rural areas are not served.

According to Consumers Union, cable TV rates in areas served by only one provider are on average 17% higher than in areas served by two or more. See: Cable Mergers, Monopoly Power, and Price Increases.
Direct TV and Dish Network
Dish Network and Direct TV both offer free HDTV options. To accommodate increased HDTV programming, Dish Network has expanded their bandwidth capabilities. Direct TV will soon be able to offer over 1500 HDTV channels.
Each additional satellite tv receiver requires a separate connection to the dish. Make sure the satellite retailer does not charge "outlet fees".
Offers from Direct TV or Dish Network for free DVR or free HDTV usually require subscription to a certain level of satellite service.
Direct TV and Dish Network, of course, require either an 18" or 20" satellite dish.
If you rent your residence, the FCC has ruled that you may install a satellite dish in any private area such as a patio or balcony. Mounting the satellite dish in a shared area, however, is at the discretion of the landlord.
